How would you make sense of your life if you thought it might end tomorrow?

Vesna Goldsworthy breezed through life - a top student at Belgrade University, a presenter of a fashionable radio programme, a poet who performed her work to a crowd of thirty thousand people, a member of the Yugoslav League of Communists, a descendant of one of the fiercest Montenegrin tribes and, perhaps more than anything else, a pampered child of the Serbian middle class. In 1986, at the age of twenty-four, she left Yugoslavia for London to marry an Englishman she had met at the Karl Marx Institute in Bulgaria two years previously. She had no doubt that she would be just as good at being English.

At the BBC World Service, where she worked for seven years, she broadcast news bulletins about her own country's bloody dissolution and learnt - faced with the ghosts of her childhood amid the rubble -- that she could still tell "her side" simply by how much it hurt. She wanted to keep her mother tongue alive but 'now knew more words for dying than the Inuit know for snow'. Becoming English was not so simple after all.

Vesna started writing the story of her life when she became aware - faced with the diagnosis of breast cancer when her son was only two - how strange his mother's life might one day appear to her child. Surrounded by mementos of her son's British ancestors who served in the furthest reaches of India and Africa, she wondered if the story of the communist world she came from was even stranger, precisely because it had disappeared so abruptly.

Writing a book through which her son could continue hearing his mother's voice, Vesna learned how to make sense of the fractures and dislocations which marked her life just as surely as the scars which now ran across her body:

'In its fragmented way, my life makes perfect sense. There is nothing extraordinary about it, but, as I try to write it down, I can feel it burning.'

In prose that is exquisite in its precision, Vesna tells the story of herself, her family and her lost country. Decija igraonica "Poletarac" Posebno nam je zadovoljstvo obavestiti vas da se rad decije igraonice - "Poletarac" u organizaciji Srpskog drustva iz Londona nastavlja i u septembru 2005-e! Cilj ove igraonice je da deca kroz igru i druzenje nauce srpski jezik (pisanje, citanje i gramatiku), kao i srpske obicaje. Igraonica se odrzava svake subote tokom skolske godine 2005/06 u prostorijama St.John's Church, North End Road, Fulham, London SW6 7PX (2 minuta od Fulham Broadway podzemne stanice i prostorija Srpskog drustva) u trajanju od 2 casa (od 15.00 do 17.00 h) Program je namenjen deci starosne dobi od 5 do 12 godina. Igraonicu vodi uciteljica gdja Stevanka Vidanovic uz pomoc roditelja - clanova Srpskog drustva. Gdja Vidanovic je stekla 37-godisnje uciteljsko iskustvo u osnovnoj skoli Slobodan Penezic Krcun u Prizrenu, gde je i zavrsila visu uciteljsku skolu. Parsons Green Fair Vasar na Parsons Green-u 2 July 2005, 11h - 18h Kao i svake godine predstavljamo Srpsku zajednicu na ovom predivnom vasaru. Dodite i posetite nas na nasoj tezgi! Redovno, svake godine, predstavljamo se srpskom domacom kuhinjom: gibanice, kifle, strudle, razni kolaci i grickalice, tradicionalna srpska domaca jela; sve pripremljeno dobrovoljno i sa puno paznje od nasih domacica - clanova Srpskog drustva (i, naravno, nije samo za gledanje) Vasar je divna prilika za druzenje, kako medju nasim ljudima, tako i sa ostalim manjinama na teritoriju Fulhama, kao i domacinima Englezima. Vasar je svake godine sve bolje i bogatije pripremljen. Pronadjite malo vremena da posle subotnjeg shopping-a posetite vasar u parku na Parsons Green-u. Park se nalazi odma preko puta Parsons Green podzemne stanice (District line); uvek je bucno i veselo, tako da cete ga vrlo lako naci. Ocekujemo vas u velikom broju - dobrodosli! Za sve zainteresovane da se ukljuce u pripremi hrane za nasu tezgu, kao i u donacijama vama nepotrebnih stvarcica koje mozemo prodati (bric-a-brac), jos uvek ima mesta. Srpski dan u Lesteru

Srpski dan u Lesteru - U subotu 4. juna 2005. u Lesteru se odrzava ovogodisnji Srpski dan sa mnostvom izmena u novoj organizaciji. Sportska takmicenja pocinju u 11 sati a mesto desavanja je Fullhurst Community College, Imperial Avenue. SPORTOVI: Za fudbalski turnir je prijavljeno 12 timova i mesta su popunjena. Kosarkaski turnir 3 protiv 3 ce se odrzati u novoizgradjenoj hali. Vec su najavljene ekipe iz svih delova Engleske pa ocekujemo da se zvanicno prijave. Svaka ekipa moze imati 2 rezerve. Takode ako bude prijava napravicemo kosarkaski turnir i za lepsi pol. Takodje je u planu takmicenje u sutiranju trojki. Broj ekipa i takmicara je ogranicen pa molimo da pozurite sa prijavama. Posto mesta jos ima zainteresovane ekipe mogu ostaviti svoju adresu na telefon 07816966071 pa ce im biti poslana forma za prijavu ekipe i sve ostale potrebne informacije. Za ljubitelje bocanja ce biti organizirano takmicenje. Za decu ce takoder biti postavljen zamak za naduvavanje. U vecernjim casovima u srpskom klubu je predvidjen program gde ce se dodeliti pehari a i pratice se TV prenos kvalifikacione fudbalske utakmice Srbija-Belgija. Takode gostovace muzicki bend iz Srbije sa pop-folk pevacicom Sanjom. Ovo je poziv na druzenje, dobar provod prvenstveno a takmicenje u sportskom duhu za one koji uzmu ucesca u navedenim sportovima. Najlaksi put da nas pronadjete: Bilo da stizete sa severne strane M1 ili sa juzne strane M1 ili sa M69 idete ka Junction 21 na autoputu M1. Od junction 21 prelazite na put oznacen A 5460-Leicester. Pratite A 5460 i nastavljate tim putem pravo i proci cete Jaguar prodajni salon pa zatim nakon sto prodete KFC nastavljate pravo pa na sledecem semaforu skrecete levo u Imperial Avenue gde cete nakon sto prodete raskrsnicu naci Fullhurst Community College.

ГОДИШЊИ ИЗВЈЕШТАЈ О РАДУ СРПСКОГ ДРУШТВА - 2005

Годишња Скупштина Српског друштва 25. мај 2005.

На нашој десетој и јубиларној Скупштини Српског друштва уз велику присутност наших чланова је свечано најављена јубиларна прослава десетогодишњице нашег постојања. Прослава је одржана 27. маја у грчком ресторану "Акрополис" уз пратњу двочланог музичког састава "Маје и Марка" - Маје Поповић и Марка Чолака.
Јубиларна прослава је доживјела велики успјех и уз велику посјету и сјајну атмосферу за коју су одговорни музичари Маја и Марко, Српско друштво је успјело да прикупи £1000 од продаје карата.
Да код нас није све само забава најбоље говори и извјештај са скупштине на којој се говорило о нашим циљевима, финансијама, изабрано ново чланство и нашој будућности.

Наш дугогодишњи председник Михајло Мики Стојиљковић је након три године на овој функцији по нашем статуту морао да сиђе са те позиције, те је умјесто њега за новог председника изабран нас дугогодишњи члан и бивши секретар Миливоје Пале Брозичевић. Мики Стојиљковић је остао члан извршног одбора а на скупштини је дао испраћајну изјаву поводом одласка са позиције председника која је изазвала аплауз присутних чланова. Од старих чланова, са позиције секретара је отишла и Нада Хинић Вукадиновић која више неће бити у извршном одбору Српског друштва али ће и даље помагати рад Извршног одбора. Нада је дала исцрпан финансијски извјештај који описује тешку ситуацију у коме се Српско друштво тренутно налази.
Финансије су увијек проблем свих добротворних организација али тренутна ситуација Српског друштва је једна од најтежих у читавој историји ове организације. Свака врста помоћи а посебно новчана је добро дошла и неопходна Српском друштву. Успут молимо све чланове који нису до сада платили чланарину да то ураде јер од тога може да зависи и сам опстанак Српског друштва.
За нове чланове одбора су изабрани наши дугогодишњи активни чланови: Олга Гаковић, Гордана Миллер, Свјетлана Терзић и Јелисавета Радовановић. Од старих чланова одбора су остали Љиљана Дејановић и Даниел Варићак а напустила нас је Наташа Кочиш. Стенли Прајд (Stenly Pride) је изабран за почасног члана друштва.
На крају скупштине смо непредвиђено саслушали сјајно предавање претставника Вукове задужбине из Новог Сада. Претставник Вукове задужбине нам је прочитао избор записа и народних предања збирке Вука Стефановића Караџића из српских крајева Лике (Крајине), Босанске Крајине (Републике Српске), Херцеговине, Црне Горе и Србије сто ја заслужило највећи аплауз.

Kurs ce se odrzavati dva puta nedeljno, utorkom od 19.00 do 21.00 i subotom od 15.30 do 17.30 sati u prostorijama Srpskog drustva na Fulamu. Kurs organizujemo za sve clanove Srpskog drustva i srpske zajednice u Londonu, uz pomoc i kooperaciju The Basic Skills Support Unit - projekta izmedju "Hammersmith and Fulham Adult Education Service" i "Blythe Neighbourhood Council". Kurs traje sedam nedelja (do kraja marta 2005.-e) sa mogucnoscu produzetka ako bude postojalo interesovanje ljudi da se kurs nastavi. Cena kursa je Ł20.00. Predavac, profesor engleskog jezika gdja Snezana O'Leary, pobrinuce se za kvalitetu nastave koja ce se voditi strogo po planu i sistemu Britanskog obrazovanja za odrasle (British Adult Education System) kojeg ce nadlgedati Glavni predavac BSSU centra, gdja Ljiljana Colak. Poems on the Underground by the celebrated Serbian poet Vasco Popa 31 January 2005 Poems on the Underground is launching its 20th year with a new set of poems, to be displayed in 2,000 Tube cars on the London Underground for eight weeks from Monday 31 January. The poets featured include contemporary prize-winning poets Kathleen Jamie and David Constantine, the 17th century Cavalier poet Richard Lovelace, Thomas Hardy, whose compassionate novels and poems spanned the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the unjustly neglected Northumbrian poet Basil Bunting, and the great Serbian poet Vasco Popa.

Are Lord Ashdown's relentless efforts to abolish the Republika Srpska tantamount to helping Islamism reinforce its Bosnian foothold in the heart of Europe? What would be the security implications of an independent, predominantly Muslim Kosovo? Skola engleskog jezika za odrasle U Srpskom drustvu vec je duze vreme aktivna "Skola engleskog jezika za odrasle". Skola je besplatna za sve clanove Srpskog drustva. Odrzava se dva puta nedeljno u poslepodnevnim casovima (ponedeljkom i cetvrtkom). Zeleli bi da pozovemo sve zainteresovane da se ukljuce u novu skolsku godinu, koja pocinje 24. januara 2005. Course of Serbian language for adults

Course of Serbian language for adults for non Serbian speakers level: lower intermediate Course will continue on Wednesday, 19 January 2005 It is an evening course (from 7 to 8.30 pm). Course is aimed for those who now very little of (spoken) language (we recommend this course to all students who attended our previous years beginners course). The course introduces students to an understanding of spoken and written language in everyday situations. So called direct system of study is applied. The courses will be held on the premises of the Serbian Society, which is a few minutes from Fulham Broadway underground station (District line). The price for the course is £150 (£10 per each 90 minutes long lesson). Mrs Snezana O'Leary, a qualified Serbian teacher with many years of teaching experience will be responsible for good quality and high standard of the course. Decija igraonica "Poletarac"

Decija igraonica "Poletarac" Posebno nam je zadovoljstvo obavestiti vas da se rad decije igraonice - "Poletarac" u organizaciji Srpskog drustva iz Londona nastavlja u januaru 2005-e! Cilj ove igraonice je da deca kroz igru i druzenje nauce srpski jezik (pisanje, citanje i gramatiku), kao i srpske obicaje. Igraonica se odrzava svake subote tokom skolske godine 2004/05 u prostorijama St. John's Church, North End Road, Fulham, London SW6 7PX (2 minuta od Fulham Broadway podzemne stanice i prostorija Srpskog drustva) U trajanju od 2 casa (od 15.00 do 17.00h) Program je namenjen deci starosne dobi od 5 do 12 godina. Igraonicu vodi uciteljica gdja Stevanka Vidanovic uz pomoc clanova Srpskog drustva. Gdja Vidanovic je stekla 37-godisnje uciteljsko iskustvo u osnovnoj skoli Slobodan Penezic Krcun u Prizrenu, gde je i zavrsila visu uciteljsku skolu.
